So, that happened!

Following Christ, when we don't know where he's leading.

Proverbs 16:9  “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Nothing makes that Proverb come to life more than the last year.

A year ago my wife and I were getting ready to host a graduation party for our second oldest daughter, Libby, trying to get our entire house packed up to be loaded into a trailer, and frantically trying to figure out where we were going live for the next month until our next home was ready.  We were saying goodbye to friends and family, and a city that had been our home for the past 6 years. I was also preparing to give my final sermon to a church that I (actually, our whole family) had scratch planted in my hometown.

The previous October, just months after returning from a sabbatical, we concluded that the Lord was calling us to something new, but we had no idea where. We notified our church in November.

In the midst of all the chaos of the decision to leave Iowa City, a wonderful group of believers in the suburbs of Chicago was wondering (and praying about) what the Lord had in store for their new site in Palos. Would they fold back into the Hinsdale congregation, as their primary planting pastor felt God calling him to pursue a role more suited to his gifting?

By early April of 2015, my wife and I had no offers that interested us, and our last day at the church was the Sunday before Memorial Day.

By early April 2015, Trinity had no candidates that fit what they were looking for, and their planting pastor had a given Trinity an end date of June 2015. Plans were underway to bring the Palos site back into the Hinsdale congregation.

God is amazing! In April, Ted Powers, a longtime friend and mentor (and member of Trinity), called me about an opportunity in Chicago and asked me to call Geoff Ziegler.  We talked, we dreamed, we realized we both loved both loved Star Trek, and that we both wanted to see the Western and Southern suburbs reshaped by the gospel. Within a couple weeks the Lord did something amazing – he answered two sets of prayer requests at the same time.

God is amazing! Our house sold within a week near our asking price, the buyers demanded a quick closing date, we found a home in Orland Park, and the Mattson family graciously opened their bed and breakfast to me, and then the rest of our family. Our first day at Trinity was June 1, 2015.

God is amazing!  Both congregations are growing.  New believers are coming to faith in Christ. Disciples are being equipped to experience and extend the transforming presence of Christ - together.

God is amazing! Geoff and Brent and I have learned even though dancing as a trio can be difficult, it is a thing of beauty when you all learn how to move with each other.

God is amazing! All he asks is that we follow him, even when we have no idea where he is leading.

Genesis 12:1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”

Abram had no idea what he was getting himself into.

Mark 1:16-2016 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.”

The disciples had no idea what they were getting themselves into

Proverbs 16:9  “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Lead on, King Jesus!
